How to Help the Children Affected by the Disasters in Japan

By Ashley Morse, Macaroni Kid, Palm Beach Gardens/Jupiter, FL March 16, 2011

We hope that all of you are holding your children a little tighter after watching the devastating news coming out of Japan this last week; I know we are. If you are looking for a way to help the tens of thousands of children who have been displaced and are suffering as a result of this tragic disaster please consider donating to Save the Children. Your donation will contribute to the efforts that organization has been to ensure that the needs of the children affected by this disaster have been met.
On March 13, 2011, Save the Children warned that as many as 100,000 children may have been displaced because of the earthquake and tsunami in Japan.  “We are concerned for as many as 100,000 children who may have been displaced because of last Friday’s earthquake and tsunami. Many of them will have lost their homes and been forced to take refuge in unfamiliar places like evacuation centers that might cause them to be afraid and anxious,” said Stephen McDonald, who is leading Save the Children’s relief efforts in Japan.  “There is also a risk that some of them will have become separated from their parents and family members because of the disaster. It is important we provide support to parents and children who are struggling to cope in the aftermath of the disaster,” said McDonald.  Save the Children has a team in Sendai, one of the worst-affected areas, establishing an operations base to help the most vulnerable children and their families. Teams from Tokyo arrived in Sendai on Monday to set up a network of child-friendly spaces aimed to provide children in shelters with a safe place to play, and to give parents a break from watching their children while they register for emergency assistance.  Donations can be made to Save the Children’s “Japan Earthquake Tsunami Children in Emergency Fund” www.savethechildren.org/japanquake or by calling 1-800-728-3843. Or Text “JAPAN" to 20222 to donate $10 to Save the Children for Japan earthquake relief (U.S. Only, standard message rates apply). Save the Children is the leading independent organization creating lasting change in the lives of children in need in the United States and around the world. When disaster strikes around the world, Save the Children is there to save lives with food, medical care and education and remains to help communities rebuild through long-term recovery programs. As quickly and as effectively as Save the Children responds to tsunamis and civil conflict, it works to resolve the ongoing struggles children face every day — poverty, hunger, illiteracy and disease — and replaces them with hope for the future.
