March Into Spring

As February recedes, March brings the promise of Spring

By Shazia N. Anwar March 16, 2011

It's a timeless ritual of renewal - Mother Nature and all her inhabitants shed their winter chill and wake up to the coming warmth. Hibernating animals wake, birds prepare for their journey home, and plants and trees sprout new life.

Commemorating the arrival of Spring together as a family offers everyone a chance to say goodbye to Winter and to welcome Spring and all the newness around them. Here are a few ideas of activities you can do with your kids as Spring approaches:

- put your winter clothes away. This offers everyone in your family a great chance to reflect on the fun times they had during Winter. Plus, it creates space, not only in the closet, but in your kid's minds, about the fun new activities to look forward to in Spring.

- buy something new. This does not have to be an expensive endeavor. But buying a new article of clothing or a decorative piece for the house brings new light and color into your home and moves you away from the dark and bold colors of winter.

- find a new recipe. Every culture has seasonal food traditions. Create your own that includes lighter fare such as fruits and vegetables, and put away the winter stews.

Do you already have a ritual for Spring you'd like to share? Is it a cultural and/or religious ritual or one you and your family have created over the years? Please share your ideas with your neighbors in the comments below.

Enjoy the coming of Spring!
