As the parent of a special needs child, there are not always open doors for inclusive activities for my daughter. At the age of 5 my daughter, deaf since birth, was diagnosed with autism. The dual diagnosis often prevents her from the opportunity to be included in extracurricular activities. When a friend suggested horseback riding, I was elated. Our first lesson was great. Taylor, 20, was thrilled to see the horses and optimistic about her first ride. When she mounted the horse, she had a sense of peace and ease. Her calmness was apparent when she rounded the corner after being on the trail, I knew that this was the perfect activity for her.
